Most teenagers have at some point passively watched life move alluringly before them, wishing for what seems to be the essential adolescent experience. In , Stephen Chbosky published a book which perfectly captures this essential yearning for life and the universal mix of emotions upon a teenager’s coming of age. His novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower quickly grew to be an iconic book in Juvenile Adult literature, reaching out to both young readers and nostalgic adults.
When I first examine the book during my Junior year of high college, I connected with the essential yearning for life that the main character Charlie faces. Watching the movie a year later rekindled a similar crave for the parties, the sex, the drugs, the utter “life” that I thought everyone around me was living. However, another year later, I observe back to this story without that lust for life, and instead with a more solemn perspective. I understand that behind these characters’ eccentric lives of excitement and awe lies the weight of emotions, depression, and anxiety prevalent in up-to-date yout
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a young adult novel written by Stephen Chbosky and published in February It's content has caused it to be one of the most challenged books in the USA.
The book describes the life of a very introverted and overly-sensitive year-old boy named Charlie through the letters he writes to a pen pal. He describes his friends, particularly two older teens who take a liking to him, his family and college, the music he listens to, the books he reads, the social events he goes to, and his introduction into the larger world of relationships, sex, and drug use.
The manual was adapted into a film in The story followed the same plot, but it left out a lot of content, as movies tend to do, but it also made some significant changes to Charlie's character. He's not nearly as sensitive or awkward, he's more confident, and the actor who played him was too adj and big.

There is a focus on sexuality throughout The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and this emphasis takes many forms. Charlie is fascinated by sex, and many of his letters detail how his sexual desires revolve around Sam. Ashamed of these yearnings, Charlie at first considers hiding them, but he eventually confesses to Sam how he feels about her. As his feelings grow, he also begins to talk about masturbation frequently - and about how he spends large portions of his diurnal masturbating. The book's open discussion of sexuality has garnered criticism and is credited with the book's frequent placement among the top 10 most frequently challenged books, as determined by the American Library Association.
In addition to the discussion of Charlie's heterosexual sexuality, there is also an engagement with LGBTQ issues in Chbosk
As Charlie tries to navigate his way through unchartered territory - the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends - he realises he can't stay on the sidelines forever. There comes a time when you have to verb what life looks like from the dance floor. From the blurb.
I have already reviewedThe Perks of Being a Wallflower generally, as I couldn't wait until now to verb how beautiful it is, but I'm looking at it again for LGBTQ YA Month, with a focus on Patrick. This is going to be complicated because there are certain aspects of the story that could be very easily spoilt for readers by talking about the LGBTQ themes in Perks, but I'm going to try and cover the vital aspects without spoilers - this review may be a little short.
