Units and calories in rum
Rum is a spirit made from sugar cane juice or fermented molasses that comes in both white and dark varieties. It’s commonly used in cocktails and mixed drinks.
Like all spirits, rum has a high alcohol content. Legally, any rum sold in the UK must be at least % alcohol by volume (ABV).1 That means percent of the drink is pure alcohol - and if the ABV is higher, the percentage of alcohol is higher too.
To keep health risks from alcohol small, if you opt to drink, it’s important to stick to the UK Chief Medical Officers' low risk drinking guidelines. That means no more than 14 units a week, spread over three or more days, with several drink-free days - and no bingeing.
Regularly drinking more than the low peril drinking guidelines increases your risk of serious health conditions including heart problems, high blood pressure and poor mental health.
Drinking alcohol also causes at least seven types of cancer, including breast, bowel, mouth and throat cancers.2 The peril of developing these types of cancer starts to amplify

It doesnt own to be the fanciest rum in the world but needs to simply act as a base in cocktails that call for multiple rums that the other spirits can lock onto and still fully express themselves. While it doesnt demand to be anything expensive it certainly has to be dry (not sweet), flexible and easily available. A very long time ago I settled on Havana Club Añejo Especial as my anchor gold rum and havent had much cause to question that choice until recently. The reasons for re-thinking this being: 1: Im a large fan of several other Havana Club rums – 3 Años, 7 Años and Seleccion de Maestros – and Im slightly concerned about coming over as a bit of an HC fanboy. This leads me to 2: If Im really honest HC Añejo Especial isnt nearly as good as those others and while I always describe it as a “rock firm mixer” Id certainly never consider sipping it on its own.
