Spoilers for Black Clover
If you’ve ever watched a shounen anime, you’re probably familiar with at least some of the tropes that their female characters are typically burdened with: the damsel in distress, the “strong” female who gets mocked for being too “manly,” the faux action girl who’s talked up as badass but never seems to undertake anything important, etcetera. Black Clover has often been compared to popular titles of the last generation since its debut in , with protagonist Asta often labeled a Naruto clone, and some of his devil abilities eq

Black Clover Subtly Shows One Path to Making Manga More Diverse
How other characters react to the mannerisms of a new Black Clover villain demonstrates the best way that a manga can be more inclusive of a more diverse population in general.
In chapter of Black Clover, Lucius Zogratis' Paladin Yrul exhibits a speech impediment that results in him having to repeat the first syllable of certain words no more than once. But none of Yrul's opponents, including Asta, his devil partner Liebe or Yami's sister Ichika comment or even react to his stutter as though he was speaking normally. Chapter of Black Clover is by mangaka Yuki Tabata, translator Taylor Engel and letterer Annaliese "Ace" Christman.
Black Clover's Heroes Don't Mock Yrul For His Stutter
What's so compelling about Asta, Liebe, and Ichika's decision to ignore Yrul's stuttering is that the Paladin doesn't deserve any kindness. When he's tripping over certain words, their opponent is specifically mocking their skills or lack thereof and directly calls out Ichika for being pathetic even though she's supp
